History & Heritage

Fully immerse yourself in the Barbadian way of life by first learning all about its fascinating history.  Here are a few key facts to pique your interest!

  • Barbados was inhabited by Carib and Arawak Native Americans for centuries before being colonised by the English in the early 17th century.
  • Through the plantation system and slavery, it became the world’s prominent sugar producer by 1650.
  • Barbados became fully independent from the UK in 1966.
  • Bajans (the familiar term for Barbadians) speak English with a very distinct accent, that is spiced with words in West-African-English pidgin – also called Bajan!

There are so many interesting buildings, landmarks, museums and monuments to visit. In particular, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison is an absolute must-see on any cultural tour of the island.
