Historical sites

For history lovers, a private day tour is the perfect way to get around several important historical sites at your own speed. Heading east out of Inverness, you could have a wonderful day exploring the historic (and current) army base at Fort George and the impressive mediaeval Cawdor Castle and Gardens. The prehistoric Clava Cairns have long been a source of wonder. They’ve gained international fame recently, having featured in Outlander. And Culloden, site of the last battle fought on British soil in 1746, is definitely a must-visit.

Highland Landscapes

If you’re interested in experiencing the beautiful Highland landscapes, how about a trip to Loch Ness? You might even spot Nessie if you’re lucky! Ancient Urquhart Castle is magnificently situated at the Loch. It offers the chance to imagine some of the most dramatic chapters of Scotland’s history. Inverness is close to many stunning beaches and interesting stretches of coastline too. Chanonry Point on the Black Isle is only 20 minutes away from Inverness city. It’s a great place for dolphin-spotting and provides fabulous views across the Moray Firth to Fort George.

Whisky Distilleries

For the whisky lovers, what about including a distillery visit or two? Glenmorangie, Tomatin, and Balblair distilleries are all within striking distance of Inverness. Take the opportunity to learn all about how your favourite whiskies are made. The history and passion involved in malt whisky-distilling is fascinating.

These are just a few of the available options for your Private Custom Day Tour from Inverness. Get in touch to create your ideal itinerary.

Outlander Highlights

You’ll visit Wardlaw Mausoleum, which was built in 1634 as the burial place for the Lovat Frasers. It was  later used by the Lovat clan until the early 19th century. Venture into the crypt where you’ll learn about the mystery surrounding the double lead-lined coffin. It was said to contain the headless body of Simon Fraser, the 11th Lord Lovat (Jamie’s grandfather in Outlander). Did you know that ‘Simon the Fox’ was the last man to be executed by beheading in 1747?

You’ll also visit the attractive ruins of Beauly Priory. Dating back to 1230, this was the burial site for the Frasers of Lovat and MacKenzies as far back as 1479. It was at Beauly Priory that Claire of the Outlander books came across the Lovat Seer, Maisri, when she and Jamie were visiting his grandfather Simon Fraser prior to the Jacobite Rising of 1745.

Enjoy a visit to Culloden Battlefield, where Jamie survived the brutal and bloody end to the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Your last stop of the day is Clava Cairns, three well-preserved Bronze Age burial chambers each surrounded by a circle of standing stones. The site boasts a ‘split stone’, similar to the one that features in the first Outlander book, when Claire was transported back in time to 1743. So far none of our day tour guests have been lucky enough to follow her, but you never know!
