Why is sustainable tourism important in Scotland?

The environment, culture and heritage are what sets the country apart as a destination.  Scotland is so special, the memories you make will last you a lifetime.  We want to protect and enhance Scotland for future generations to enjoy, protect the environment and local communities, sustainable tourism in Scotland is important and can help us acheive this for our future generations.

Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.

How can I help sustainable tourism in Scotland?

Here’s a few tips to help you enjoy your visit to Scotland and help you to protect the environment.

  • Scotland has a ‘Freedom to Roam’ law allowing legal access to land and inland water.  You can help protect the environment, land and communities by sticking to the pathways and existing tracks, close gate’s behind you, don’t start fires and take your litter home.
  • Help your hosts by turning off lights and re-using your towels.
  • Shop local; renowned for traditional crafts, clothing, book shops and local food and drink with so many independant businesses.

Sustainable tourism schemes in Scotland.

There are a number of schemes you can look out for that support sustainable tourism.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme, supporting businesses to be more sustainable and demonstrate commitment to sustainability.  Origionally founded in Scotland the scheme is now globally recognised.

Taste our Best scheme is awarded to businesses that serve up locally sourced, quality food and drink.  There are over 100 businesses that are part of the scheme and why not?  Scotland has some of the finest local food and drink in the world.

‘Scotland is Stunning – Let’s Keep It That Way’ campaign urges visitors not to spoil Scotland’s natural beauty and wildlife by littering when they’re enjoying the delights of our coast, countryside and campsites.

#PlasticChallenge, a campaign launched by the Marine Conservation Society focuses on protecting coasts, shorelines and the wildlife that live in those precious habitats around Scotland.  You can help by reducing your plastic use and not discarding plastics.

Scottish outdoor access code is based on three key principles, respect the interest of others, care for the environment and take responsibility for your own actions.

Spirit Journeys commitment to sustainable tourism.

Responsible Travel is something we feel very strongly about here at Spirit Journeys Worldwide and for that reason, we have been introducing many Scottish trips aimed specifically at people with a passion for culture, heritage, the outdoors and landscapes.

We collaborate with other service providers that care for our bonnie Scotland, the environment and it’s communities.

We want to keep Scotland special for generations to come, thats why sustainable tourism is so important.
