Return of Outlander

Outlander Season 6 is back on our screens with backdrops of the Scottish Highlands and Islands that pull you in at every scene.  Do you watch Outlander and just wish you could be there, in the landscape?  Immersed in Scottish history and heritage, visiting ancient monuments, famous battlefields, landscapes, seascapes and legendary myths?  Here we introduce you to Outlander Tours of Scotland, three special Outlander tours taking in many of the special places featured in the Outlander seasons.

Glasgow Cathedral

The magnificent Cathedral was used as the setting for L’Hopital des Anges in Series 2, Dowanhill Street, Glasgow University , John Street and George Square, which all feature in Series 3.

The Beauty of Glencoe

Out of the city you are transported through the mountains of Glencoe, the landscapes are stunning, and the photo opportunities are endless.

The Isle of Skye, the Old Man of Storr and Kilt Rock are all on the itinerary and we also pay a visit to Flora MacDonald’s grave, a heroine of the last Jacobite uprising.

Castles and Grand Houses

The Duke of Sandringham met his end in ‘Vengeance is Mine’ at the French chateau-like Callendar House.  Through wars, rebellions and the industrial revolution, Callendar House has played host to many great historical figures over the centuries, including Mary, Queen of Scots, Cromwell and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Blackness Castle, one of Scotland’s most impressive strongholds, was built in the 15th century by one of Scotland’s most powerful families, the Crichtons.  Blackness Castle doubles as Black Jack Randall’s Fort William headquarters, Wentworth Prison, and where Jamie receives his near-death flogging.

Hopetoun House, which features as the Duke of Sandringham’s home, Belhurst Manor and located on the same estate, you will want to savour the moment as you walk up the drive and through the arched gateway towards Lallybroch and  amazing Tullibardine and Drummond as well as Tibbermore Church famous for its fantastic architecture and parks.

Clava Cairns

Clava Cairns or the Prehistoric Burial Cairns of Bulnuaran of Clava are a group of three Bronze Age cairns located near Inverness. A hugely significant and exceptionally well preserved prehistoric site, Clava Cairns is a fantastic example of the distant history of Highland Scotland, dating back about 4,000 years.

Culloden Battlefield

The powerfully emotive and atmospheric battlefield where the 1745 Jacobite Rising came to a tragic end. The richly researched, stimulating and sensitive Culloden Visitor Centre, which stands beside the battlefield, features artefacts from both sides of the battle and interactive displays that reveal the background to the conflict. It stands as a monument and a guide to a pivotal day in history. Discover how a bloody fight that lasted only an hour changed life in the Highlands forever.

Scottish Museums

Highland Folk Museum. Replicas of 18th century turf-roofed Highland crofts at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore made the ideal choice for period scenes in Outlander, including when Dougal collects the rent.

Guided Walks

Outlander-themed guided walk down the Royal Mile which extends downhill to Holyrood Palace, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland.  Edinburgh’s Royal Mile is the heart of Scotland’s historical capital.  A short walk away is the Grassmarket, an area steeped in the city’s colourful history.
