Day 1: Arrive Hanoi (-/-/-D

Upon arrival at the airport you will be met by your local guide and transferred to the hotel. (Check in time is from 14.00pm/ early check in is subject on availability & surcharge). If time permits take a walk through the old quarter & around Hoan Kiem Lake before heading to a restaurant for welcome dinner & trip orientation. Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 2: Hanoi - Night train to Lao Cai (B/L/D)

Departing the hotel at 8.30 we first visit the Temple of Literature which was constructed in 1070 and is one of Vietnam’s most significant historic sites with relics recognised by UNESCO.  The One Pillar Pagoda, founded by King Ly Thai To in 1049 will be visited next. Visit his former home, which illustrates the modesty of this Vietnamese revolutionary we will continue to picturesque West Lake and the sixth century Tran Quoc Buddhist Pagoda. Lunch will be held in one of the city’s finest restaurants. In the afternoon we will  visit the fascinating Ethnology Museum (closed on Mondays), which is both a research centre and a public museum exhibiting the ethnic groups of Vietnam. If some do not want to go to  the Ethnology Museum, as alternative  we  can visit the highly acclaimed Vietnam Women’s Museum (closed on Mondays). The museum is located near Hoan Kiem Lake and offers a wonderful insight into the lives of Vietnamese women.  You will  have dinner before transferring to the railway station for your overnight train to Sapa. Overnight on train.

Day 3: Lao Cai – Sapa – Muong Hum (B/L/D)

The train will arrive in the early morning at Lao Cai railway station, (at around 5am), you will take a quick shower at a simple but clean guesthouse and have breakfast at a local restaurant before heading to Muong Hum, a town inhabited by the Giay people. The last 8kms is super bumpy so prepare yourself for a few ups and downs. Upon arriving to Muong Hum, enjoy lunch with our host before getting ready for the trekking portion of the day. Head up to a narrow dirt track, and then downhill to the bottom of Ky Quan San valley, meeting White Hmong, Dao & Giay people along the way. Enjoy the breathtaking view of high mountains, deep valleys, streams and green terraced rice paddies. Back to homestay in the late afternoon. Overnight at homestay in Muong Hum

Note: We suggest scheduling day 3 on a Saturday. On Sunday morning there is Muong Hum market which still has a very local market atmosphere. You will meet many beautiful, colorful hill tribe people coming from surrounding villages.


Day 4: Nam Pung – Mong Xoa (B/L/D)

After breakfast (and a trip to the local market) we take a walk to Nam Pung village where the Ha Nhi people are famous for their beautiful clay-walled houses and surrounding terraced fields. We then hike up through plantations and rice terraces before reaching a Red Dao Village, where you will have the opportunity to visit a local primary school and learn more about the lives of children who live in remote areas. Continue walking to Khi Chu Phin valley where we can rest by a stream and enjoy our picnic lunch. Continue our day on the opposite bank, crossing the river will be a fun challenge, heading uphill along the dirt path through the bamboo forest and rice terraces. Our bed for tonight is with the Mong people, located among the high ranges of mountains in Ta Giang Phinh. Overnight at homestay in Mong Xoa.

Day 5: Mong Xoa – Kim Ngan – Suoi Thau (B/L/D)

Take an easy walk in the morning through the village, meeting local people and visit their homes to know more about their daily routine. Today, we will have a picnic lunch on the top of Ta Giang Phinh Mountain while staring far & wide over the lower land of Sapa & Bat Xat districts stretching along the Chinese border. The rest of today’s route is mostly downhill through remote hamlets of Black Hmong & Red Zao people. We arrive at our homestay in a Dao village where a hot delicious meal will be waiting for us. Overnight at homestay in Suoi Thau.

Saying goodbye to our host, we continue our journey to the town of Sapa. While descending along the river and beautiful mountain range, your guide will tell you more history and explain the daily routine and traditions of the different minority people in the area. After having lunch with a local family, we pass through the rice terraces and corn fields before reaching a small trail that leads you to spectacular bamboo forest. We finish the trek by hiking downhill to Can Ho inhabited by Mong & Dao people where our car is waiting to transfer you the final 14km on an asphalt road to Sapa town for our overnight stay. Overnight in Sapa.

Day 7: Sapa – Ban Den – Nam Tong – Nam Sai (B/L/D)

Leaving Sapa at 9.00am we transfer approximately 26 kms, or 1 hour to Ban Den Village with stops along the way to capture the stunning scenery of the Hoang Lien mountain range and Muong Hoa valley. The trek starts from Ban Den Village (392m) uphill along a steep trail for 1.5 hour to Nam Toong Village of the Red Zao (679m). Walking around to explore the village and talking to villagers to understand the local way of living. We leave Nam Toong for Nam Sang along a narrow mountainous trail with a series of short ascends and descends for 3 hours. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. We reach Nam Sang village (625m), home of the Xa Pho people mid-afternoon, we spend some time to explore this charming village which sits near the bottom of Nam Sai valley. Later, enjoy an easier one hour walk for through the Nam Sai valley to Ban Sai village (570m). We arrive to this large and prosperous village of the Tay people late afternoon. We have time to relax before enjoying a home cooked dinner. Overnight at homestay in Ban Sai.

Day 8: Nam Sai – Nam Nhiu – Sin Chai B (B/L/D)

Eat breakfast and depart Ban Sai at 9.00 am. Trekking along a rocky path uphill to Nam Nhiu village then continue along a dirt path for 1-2 hours to Nam Than Village, home of the Red Zao and Black Hmong (865m). This part of the trek offers stunning views of the Nam Sai and Nam Cang Valleys as well as a chance to learn more about daily life of tribal people in this remotest region of Sapa. Leaving Nam Than we trek through a wild land dotted with terraced fields amongst the mountains and rain forest. It’s finally time for a lunch break. Continue trekking for 2-3 hours in the afternoon along the same trail passing through the cultivated hilly land of Suoi Thau Commune to Sin Chai B Village of the Red Zao (733m), our home for tonight. Have a short rest before exploring this small and quiet village. Overnight at homestay in Sin Chai B.

Day 9: Sin Chai B – Nam Lang A – Ta Thang – Lao Cai. Overnight train (B/L/D)

After breakfast leave Sin Chai B around 8.30. Trek along a narrow dirt trail for 30 mins to the bottom of the valley and gradually uphill for nearly 2 hours to Nam Lang A and then continue to Nam Lang B, both villages are home to Red Zao. We can visit some local homes to learn about the Red Zao people. We take our lunch break at Nam Lang B. Following a large and rocky road for 30 mins to the top of the mountain range we then trek gradually downhill to Nam Ket Village of the Red Zao and the Tay. Continue along the same trail downhill for nearly 2 hours to Ta Thang Village which offers a panoramic view of the Red River Valley running through the Bao Thang District. We then get transferred for 1 hour by road to Lao Cai where you will have a farewell dinner before taking night train back to Hanoi capital. Overnight on train.

Day 10: Hanoi departure (B/-/-)

Arrive in Hanoi very early morning. You will be picked up by our driver and taken to a hotel to freshen up before being transferred to the airport later that day for your onward flight back home.
