Day 3: Dudhwa (B/L/D)
Wake up early and enjoy a nourishing and delicious breakfast. Your naturalist will meet you as you embark on your first jungle safari in the Terai region. Dudhwa National Park lies amid the warm, sub-tropical forests between the Himalayas and the plains of India and provides a rich blend of wildlife and flora. Start your drive at dawn to catch the first rays of the sun to enter the national park. Much of the thrill of any safari experience comes from the sheer unpredictability of the jungle. This is an adventure for you the like of which you won’t have experienced before. The park’s thick sal forests, extensive grasslands and wet marshes harbour a wide range of wildlife, but it’s what you may encounter on your wild sojourn that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Although elusive, sightings of the royal Bengal tiger, leopard, the swamp deer and the fishing cat are not entirely uncommon. Once the day brightens, you will set out atop an elephant to explore the thick grasslands in search of the regal one-horned Rhinoceros, which was first re-introduced in the park under the Rhinoceros Conservation Programme, in exchange of elephants from Nepal.
Later continue your explorations at the many water holes in the marshlands, from watchtowers. Rich in aquatic life, they are also critical breeding grounds for the Indian otters.
Dudhwa’s birds in particular, are a delight for any avid birdwatcher. Our expert naturalist will help you spot magnificent birds while explaining their behaviour and how they adapt to the local ecology. Greater hornbills, grey-headed fish eagles, spot-bellied eagle owls, greater slaty woodpecker, barbets and many more occupy these woodlands. The presence of some rare species like the Bengal florican will leave you intoxicated, and the contagious passion of your guide will help to share their excitement. End your trip taking a moment to reflect on the highlights of your safari, before returning to the Jaagir Lodge via the iconic Satiana range, the largest grassland in the area.
Enjoy a sumptuous breakfast and time at leisure.
After lunch, proceed on an hour’s drive, to the Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary. An integral part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, it is an excellent habitat for the unique flora and fauna of the Terai region, with its many bodies of water. The sanctuary is dominated by sal, ficus and crocodile bark trees, along with an array of multi-hued flowers and trees like the silk cotton tree and the flame of the forest. A swampland fed by the Sharda River, Kishanpur also features the elusive tiger and the endangered swamp deer, along with barking deer, wild boar and hog deer. Watch freshwater crocodiles bask in the sun and ducks swim on these lakes. After enjoying your game drive, return to the comforts of the luxurious lodge.
Late afternoon optional activity suggested during your stay – Excursion to Tanda Village combined with Safari to Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary Guests have the flexibility to combine the optional excursion to Tanda Village with the safari to Kishanpur Wildlife sanctuary. A vibrant hamlet occupied by a handful of families, located in the core of Kishanpur Tiger Reserve. Learn about the thrilling aspects of man-animal conflicts; living without electricity, schools or even hospitals, yet being self-sustainable – harvesting their own food, curing their illnesses and worshipping the forest gods.

Day 4: Dudhwa (B/L/D)
Today, you have an early morning start for a full day at Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. Located at a distance of 110 km southwest of your lodge, is a little known paradise encompassing 400 square km of grassland, swamps and wetlands. The Katarniaghat Forest provides a link between the tiger habitats of Dudhwa and Kishanpur in India and the Bardia National Park in Nepal. Enjoy a boat ride on the River Girwa, one of the best places in the world for sighting the gharial. Spot Gangetic dolphins, fresh water turtles, Indian elephants, albino spotted deer, Burmese pythons, white-backed vultures and others.
Relax on the banks of the river, before you head out for another thrilling opportunity to come close to the rarest of Indian wildlife, aboard a 4X4 safari vehicle. Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary enjoys its unique reputation for being the stronghold of leopards, Bengal tigers, flying squirrels, blue bulls and peafowl. The day’s adventure is complete with a visit to forest watchtower for an overview of the swampland before returning to comforts of the Jaagir lodge.
You have the flexibility to enjoy a full-day excursion to the Tharu village. Embark on a 40-kilometre drive to a small village sitting strategically on the periphery of the Indo-Nepal border – a rustic hamlet belonging to the dominant tribe of the Terai region. For centuries the Tharu have lived closely with the jungle and their traditions reflect their intimate relationship with the natural world.
Though their main occupation is farming, the colourful tribal community is renowned for their folk roots in music and dance, expert craftsmanship and their impeccable hunting skills. The Tharu excel at the art of catching and training wild elephants and making the best mahouts. Meet your local host for the day, who has previously served as an apprentice to the grand old man of Terai, renowned Indian naturalist Billy Arjun Singh. Spend the day in his intricately designed traditional home, with a captivating introduction to the culture and customs of this prolific community. Witness the warm hospitality of these people as you savour delicious Tharu cuisine after a cooking demonstration given by the ladies of the house.
Afterwards, you will have an exclusive interaction session with the ‘dancing boys’ – the popular custom of young boys being trained in the art of dance and music, dressed as women, in colourful costumes.
Continue with a visit to a local women’s association that is dedicated to the cause of employment and welfare to countless Tharu women. Enjoy a cup of tea while interacting with the ladies. Later, stroll through colourful local markets where you can see fresh produce being sold, alongside indigenous jewellery and other goods. Early evening, return to the comfort of the lodge.

The reserve is covered with sal, teak, banyan and mango trees and serves as the habitat to four species of deer, antelopes, tigers, Bengal florican, the great Indian hornbill and Terai grey langurs.
